![]() ![]() If the power supply should crap out (a not unusual occurrence in my experience.) the iMac immediately becomes a parts computer. With refurbed iMacs of that vintage going for $500 Canadian, that price provides the OP with a benchmark for figuring out how much money to put into his 2010 iMac: RAM, SSD enclosure/power supply, SSD drive, while keeping in mind that other components in the iMac aren't getting any younger. Hooking up an external USB SSD would be easy, but with the USB 2.0 bottleneck, there might not be much point.Īn external FW800 SSD will speed things up but probably not as much as USB 3.0. One problem: Your iMac has USB 3.0, and the OP's iMac doesn't. It didn't take a lot of technical know how. Just a plug and play option more or less. What I did was hook up an external SSD via USB. I didn't change the memory but going to the SSD made a huge difference. I swapped out to an external USB connected SSD and it made all the difference in the world. Answer some questions and sit back watching the computer do the work. Hardest part was figuring out what kind of format to give the new drive and once someone here answered that one, it was just like installing any other software. ![]() ![]() My computer has always been upgraded when prompted. I see refurbished 27" iMac's, same vintage Mid 2010 here. Here is a thread where some of the folks here walked me through the process of getting it set up. If the memory doesn't do the trick, I swapped out to an external USB connected SSD and it made all the difference in the world. How do I find my way out of this rabbit-hole without buying a new iMac? Is adding memory to my computer easy? I have space from what I've read. Heck I wired heathkit amplifier kits and they worked! (that's long ago.) I have little skill using computers, and none to upgrade them. I'm a hobby photographer however, this slow operation affects everything including start up speed. It's exactly as I purchased it, except for regular operating system upgrades. ![]()
